ANSWER: The best time to fish the East Cape is when you can get the time off to fish the East Cape! Seriously, we are a year-round fishery but our season runs from March until mid-November. Our peak season for our pelagic species (billfish, tuna, dorado, wahoo) is June through October. August and September can be hot but so can the fishing. Here are some more popular questions.

What Documentation do I need in Mexico?
You MUST have a passport to enter and exit Mexico. Since March 1, 2010, all U.S. citizens – including minors – have been required to present a valid passport or passport card for travel into Mexico.
You will receive a FM3 tourist card at Mexican Customs when you arrive. You must retain this tourist card and present it at your airline desk when departing.
Do I need a Mexican fishing license?
YES, you must purchase a Mexican fishing license and possess it at all times while on the water. You have the choice of a $28 weekly license (7 days from date of purchase) or $50 yearly license (365 days from date of purchase). You can purchase your license at the hotel.
How do I get from the Airport to the Hotel?
T.T. Cabo del Este is the ground transfer company that works directly with Van Wormer Resorts to provide transportation to and from the airport for all of our guests. T.T. Can I bring fish home?
Yes, fish processing, vacuum packing and flash freezing services are provided by East Cape Smoke House and per fillet pound fees apply. You have the option to provide your own cooler or purchase an airline approved shipping container to transport your catch back to the U.S. Remember to keep your maximum cooler weight under 50lbs or you may incur extra luggage charges at the airport.
Do I need to bring my own tackle?
No, East Cape Guides™ is a full outfitter. We provide all top-of-the-line conventional trolling and bait fishing tackle. Surf tackle is also provided for guided shore fishing excursions.
Do I need to know how to fish?
No, your guide will give you a thorough overview on everything you'll need to know before you get on the boat and answer any questions. While on the boat you will receive on-the-water instruction and assistance in landing your fish.
Can I fish from shore?
Absolutely, shore fishing in the East Cape can be a great time. Ask your guide about fishing for inshore game such as roosterfish and jacks. Guided shore fishing excursions are available or you can bring your own tackle.
Can I fish from a kayak?
Yes, kayak fishing in the East Cape can be a great time. Van Wormer Resorts provides rental kayaks for hourly or daily use. You will need to bring your own tackle or rent tackle from the hotel.
Are you a fly fishing guide?
No, we use conventional tackle for inshore/offshore fishing. Your guide can arrange a boat if you would like to fly fish for inshore species, but you must bring your own fly fishing gear. We recommend Baja Flyfishing Company for your East Cape fly fishing guide services.
Do you practice catch and release?
Yes, we have a mandatory release policy with all healthy billfish to fight another day. We keep all table fare fish such as dorado, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and snapper unless a client requests a release of any fish.
How do tips work?
Your guide will accept a gratuity at the end of your trip. It is also customary to tip the local crew daily. We recommend a crew tip range of $80-100 for a deluxe cruiser and $40-50 for a super panga per day.
Can I pay in US currency?
Sure, US dollars are widely accepted in Baja. Keep in mind, if you purchase items in dollars, you may receive your change in pesos. You will want to check current exchange rates before your trip. Credit cards can be used at the hotel but are not widely accepted outside the hotel. Read our Trip Checklist for more information on bringing US dollars on your trip.
Can I drink the water?
Yes, we recommend you drink bottled water and use the drinking water provided by the hotel. You do not need to keep your mouth closed when taking showers.
Can I bring illegal drugs and alcohol?
DO NOT BRING ILLEGAL DRUGS INTO MEXICO.
Mexican laws are very strict on possession of illegal drugs and you do not want to spend any time in a Mexican prison. JUST DON'T DO IT. Alcohol is legal to bring into Mexico but we recommend limiting it to a few bottles of spirits and/or wine.
Can I use my mobile phone and internet?
You can use your mobile phone in Baja, but reception can be unreliable and carriers require international activation. Van Wormer Resorts does offer WiFi Internet access and we recommend using Skype to contact family and friends.
Are there any other things to know?
The only costs not included in the price of the trip are Mexican fishing license ($28 week license), bait (usual $25-30 per day), alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and tips for the crew. Remember, East Cape Guides™ fees are not included on your hotel reservation and final bill.
